A Billion Possibilities

...when God calls you to dream beyond your current reality

Can I ask you an honest question?

When was the last time you allowed yourself to imagine a future that genuinely excited you?

Not the version you’ve carefully edited to fit your current salary. Not the version that feels “responsible.” Not the one that everyone else expects of you.

I mean the version that makes your heart beat a little faster, because if God didn’t come through, it simply wouldn’t happen.

I have noticed something about adulthood; we restrict ourselves when it comes to dreaming. As children, our imagination had no limits. We believed we could become astronauts, teachers, inventors, musicians, presidents and world changers. We built imaginary worlds with cardboard boxes and saw possibilities everywhere.

Then life happens.

A failed interview. A business that didn’t work. A relationship that ended. A scholarship we never got. The promotion that went to someone else. A prayer that seemed to go unanswered.

None of these experiences can singlehandedly destroy our dreams, but together, they quietly suggest something dangerous: “That dreaming big hurts and we shouldn’t expect too much.”

So we adjust.

We stop asking God for impossible things. We create goals that feel achievable without much faith, and we call it “being realistic.”

I know because I’ve done it too.

When we were looking to set up our first learning centre, the budget was about Ten Million Naira. In 2021, the odds were enormous; we were fresh out of lockdown, and a lot was going on globally. I looked at the vision of setting up an empowering and safe learning space for teens and immediately started calculating what I didn’t have. Not enough money. Not enough experience. Not enough influence. Not enough connections.

Instead of asking, “God, what are You able to do?” I found myself asking, “What can I realistically accomplish?” Those are two very different questions. One begins with God. The other begins with me. Fast forward to December 2022, we launched our learning centre and are now planning to open another centre to continue spreading the light of God. He is doing even more.

One of my favourite faith and dreams stories in Scripture is Abraham’s.

When God promised Abraham descendants as numerous as the stars, there was just one problem. Abraham didn’t even have one child. From a human perspective, the promise made no sense. His age argued against it. His circumstances argued against it. His reality argued against it.

Yet God invited him outside and said, “Look up.” I have always loved that image.

Because sometimes God changes our lives by changing where we’re looking.

Abraham had been looking at his limitations. God invited him to look up and count the stars.

Isn’t that what God so often does with us?

While we’re counting what we lack, He’s counting what He can do.

While we’re focused on our resources, He’s inviting us to trust His provision.

While we’re asking, “Is this possible?” He’s asking, “Do you trust Me?”

I’ve realised that one of the greatest battles of adulthood isn’t finding opportunities.

It’s expanding our imagination. Because we can never build a future we’ve refused to imagine. And maybe that’s why Scripture repeatedly reminds us that God’s thoughts are higher than ours. Not because He wants to remind us how small we are. But because He wants to invite us into seeing life from His perspective.

What if your current reality isn’t the ceiling? What if it’s simply the starting point?

Maybe the business idea isn’t too ambitious. Maybe the book isn’t too late. Maybe returning to school at forty isn’t foolish. Maybe applying for that leadership role isn’t arrogance. Maybe fostering that child, planting that church, launching that nonprofit or moving to that new city isn’t unrealistic after all. Maybe you’ve simply been measuring your future with today’s ruler.

Here’s something God has been teaching me recently.

Before He expands our opportunities, He often expands our capacity.

Before He changes our circumstances, He changes the way we think.

Because if our thinking stays small, we’ll eventually shrink every opportunity He sends our way.

The biggest miracle in Abraham’s story wasn’t Isaac. It was that Abraham learned to believe in God before he could see the evidence. And with His belief in God, He got “many other sons”, and we are one of them in Christ! Faith enlarged his imagination long before it changed his reality. Perhaps that’s what God wants to do for us, too. Not just give us bigger opportunities. But give us bigger faith.

There are a Billion Possibilities in God. Dare to dream HIS Dreams and see your life exceed all milestones and expectations.

As we continue this conversation throughout the month, I want you to remember this:

Your current reality is information. It is not your identity, and it is certainly not your destiny.

God has never been confined by the size of someone’s bank account, age, education or network. He’s looking for people who are willing to believe Him.

This week, write down one dream you’ve quietly downsized because life disappointed you. Beside it, answer these three questions:

• Why did I stop believing this was possible?

• What does God say about impossibilities?

• What’s one courageous step I can take this week?

Then take that step before next Sunday.

Don’t wait until you feel ready. Faith grows as we walk.

Prayers for our Billion Possibilities

Father, thank You for being bigger than my current reality. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed disappointment to define my expectations. Expand my imagination so I can begin to see my life through Your eyes instead of my fears. Give me the courage to dream again, the wisdom to take faithful steps, and the confidence to trust that You are already working beyond what I can see. Help me to believe that nothing is impossible with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
